L'ode originale fut écrite en bengali mais c'est dans sa version hindi, que sa première strophe sur une musique dérivée d'une composition de Ram Singh Thakur, qu'elle fut adoptée comme hymne de l'Union indienne par l'Assemblée constituante du 24 janvier 1950 (
